Zhang Daqian (Chang Dai-chien, 1899-1983)
Hermit Strolling along a Bamboo Grove by the Stream
ink on cardboard, framed
titled by the artist at the back of the painting, with two seals of the artist
Inscription:
Blue birds fly past casting shadows dissimilar,
Scrambling to see the wavering jade stems several in number.
I love to be in the mountains where the moon shines bright,
And no candles, when writing poetry, are ever needed for their silvery light.
When the old man (Dong) po (Su Shi) visited Daochang Hill, there were attendants to hold the candles for him. He was so pleased that he painted a stem of bamboo in the wind. Now living all by myself in the mountains, I take pleasure in painting. My exhilaration is not low either. Yuan.
