Gabriel P. Weisberg, Bonvin, 1979, p. 220, no. 132 (illustrated).

Francois Bonvin championed the Realist conviction that everyday subject matter, from still life to intimate genre scenes, deserved to be painted with seriousness and sincerity. Inspired by the work of 17th- and 18th-century still life and genre painters, notably Jean-Baptiste Simeon Chardin, he was instrumental in bringing renewed attention and interest to these artistic traditions in the 19th-century.
