UPON REQUEST, PROVIDED BY SIMON PARKES
The following condition report is kindly provided by Simon Parkes.
This work is in beautiful condition. The canvas is unlined and still stretched on its original stretcher. The painting is probably clean and is well varnished. Two diagonal lines of retouching are visible at the top of the hat on the right side of the face when the work is viewed under ultraviolet light. These restorations correspond to a stroke of paint beneath the surface, are quite heavy handed, and could certainly be applied more delicately. There are a few other spots of retouching in the left side of the hat, but again these do not address any paint loss but rather were applied over a few pentimenti. The retouches could certainly be revisited, or the work could be hung as is.
