Summit of Sierra depicts the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, where Albert Bierstadt resided from July of 1871 until October of 1873. With San Francisco as his primary residence during those years, the artist made frequent excursions throughout the Sierras in the early 1870s.
In 1872, Bierstadt traveled to the southern Sierra on at least three occasions, visiting Yosemite and the Lake Tahoe region. It is likely that Summit of Sierra hails from his trip to Mt. Brewer in the southern Sierra during July of 1872.
