Autograph manuscript answer, responding to a Parliamentary petition calling for the dismissal of the government

25 lines, written as a subscription beneath a copy of a Humble Address urging the appointment of “a firm, efficient, extended united Amin[istration]”, in which the king expresses sympathy with their objectives but refusing to dismiss the administration without a specific charge or complaint, 3 pages, folio, n.d., remains of guards, minor spotting and creasing

“…I did not consider the Failure of my recent Endeavours as a final Bar to the Accomplishment of the purpose which I had in View, if it could have been attained on those Principles of Fairness and Equality, without which, it can neither be honourable to those who are concerned, nor lay the Foundation of such a strong and stable Government as may be of lasting advantage to the country…”

KING GEORGE III AND THE CONSTITUTION. This manuscript exemplifies the complex relationship between monarch, administration, and legislature in the 18^th century. The King is at pains to acknowledge the right of the Commons to oppose the government and assures the petitioners that “They will ever find Me disposed to shew My Regard to the true Principles of the Constitution”. On the other hand, however, he makes it very clear that whilst Parliament may offer advice, the dismissal of the administration falls under the royal prerogative.
