This delightful little painting of cherubs, all curved lines and pastel colours, is typical of the kind of painting that was popular with the aristocracy during the reign of Louis XV. Jean-Honoré Fragonard was one of the most famous artists of the eighteenth century: his ingenuity and his talent enabled him to create some of the most striking images representing the rococo style.
This allegory of spring is a perfect illustration of this aspect of Fragonard’s work. The easy spontaneity with which the painting seems to have been executed bears witness to the artist’s masterly dexterity.
According to Jean-Pierre Cuzin (op. cit., p. 305, no. 237) this work is a sketch for a larger oval painting (76 x 87 cm), dating to 1772 and now in a private collection.
