Joseph Jansen

Joseph Jansen (1829-1905) was a nineteenth century landscape painter, born in Aachen in Germany. At the age of seventeen, he enrolled in the art school in Düsseldorf, where he developed his artistic skills. He later enjoyed a degree of success throughout his career, influenced by other renowned landscape artists of the period, such as Andreas Achenbach (1815-1910), Carl Friedrich Lessing (1808-1880) and Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902).

His fascination for the Alps is reflected in his works, in which he realistically captured the mountains’ grandeur, using a subtle palette that was perfectly adapted to large paintings, like this imposing panorama of Saint-Martin-sur-Arve near Sallanches. In this composition, the shaded riverbed contrasts with the vast snowy slopes of Mont Blanc, its looming peaks bathed in a bright light.

Joseph Jansen (1829-1905) est un peintre paysagiste du XIX^e siècle. Né à Aix-la-Chapelle, en Allemagne. À l'âge de 17 ans, il s'inscrit à l'école de peinture de Düsseldorf, où il développe ses compétences artistiques. Il a ensuite connu un certain succès tout au long de sa carrière, influencé par d'autres artistes paysagistes de renom de son époque, tels qu'Andreas Achenbach (1815-1910), Carl Friedrich Lessing (1808-1880) ou Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902).

Sa fascination pour les Alpes se reflétait dans ses œuvres, capturant avec réalisme la grandeur des montagnes. Pour cela, il utilisait une palette de couleurs subtile qui convenait parfaitement à la réalisation de grandes peintures, comme pour cet imposant panorama de Saint-Martin-sur-Arve près de Sallanches. Dans cette composition, le lit de la rivière ombragé contraste avec la vaste face enneigée du Mont Blanc et ses pics sentinelles baignés d'une lumière vive.
