Description
FLOWN silk red, white, and blue Texas state flag. 4 x 6 inches. SIGNED and INSCRIBED in blue ink in white stripe: "Flown on Apollo 9 / Jim McDivitt."
It was not uncommon for American astronauts to fly state flags for friends or family, or to honor locations that had personal significance to the astronauts. Astronauts involved in Gemini or Apollo missions would have had strong connections to the state of Texas, given Apollo Mission Control Center's location in Houston. Born in Illinois and raised for the most part in Michigan, Jim McDivitt was the Command Pilot for Gemini IV and the Commander for Apollo 9.
