Description

[Apollo 8]

Earthrise

Large chromogenic print, 20 x 16 inches. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Apollo 8 Commander FRANK BORMAN: "'Earthrise' / as seen from Apollo 8 / Frank Borman / Apollo 8 CDR / Christmas 1968," and SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Apollo 8 Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell: "A grand oasis in the vastness of space / Jim Lovell / Apollo 8 / Christmas 1968."

When the Apollo 8 spacecraft came out from behind the Moon, Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders witnessed an "Earthrise" for the first time in human history.  It was Anders who first saw the Earth cresting the lunar horizon. Initially, he took a black and white photo, but then asked Lovell for color film. It was this second photo, seen here, that was chosen by Life magazine as one of its one hundred photographs that changed the world.
