Taken on July 20, 1969, this print shows Buzz Aldrin saluting the American flag shortly after landing on the lunar surface. The Committee on Symbolic Activities for the First Lunar Landing — receiving advice from the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, the Archivist of the United States, the NASA Historical Advisory Committee, the Space Council, and Congress — recommended carrying and planting the American flag on the Moon to NASA Administrator Thomas O. Paine.
