Description

[APOLLO 11]

Panorama of Tranquility Base

Black and white panoramic photograph, 7¼ x 22 inches, matted and framed together with NASA "Meatball" and Apollo 11 emblem patch to 15½ x 26½ inches, not examined out of frame.

SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot BUZZ ALDRIN and Command Module Pilot MICHAEL COLLINS, together with Mission Commander NEIL ARMSTRONG'S signature.

On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 Lunar Module Eagle safely touched down on the lunar surface, becoming the first manned lunar landing. It landed near the southwestern corner of the vast lunar plain known as the Sea of Tranquility (“Mare Tranquilitatis”), which was dubbed the Tranquility Base. This panoramic view of Tranquility Base was constructed from the historic photos taken by Neil Armstrong from the lunar surface (AS11-40-5961 and AS11-40-5954). Neil Armstrong, seen on the far left, casts a long shadow while the Eagle stands about 60 meters in front of him.
