A U.S. non-regulation militia artillery officer's sword, circa 1840-50


with broad straight double-edged blade formed with a half-length fuller, etched with foliage, an eagle carrying the motto ‘E. Pluribus Unum’, trophies-of-arms, the manufacturer’s details ‘Ames Mfrg Co., Chicopee, Mass.’ on one face, and with further trophies, crossed cannon, the Spanish Royal Arms and trophies-of-arms on the other, gilt-brass cruciform hilt comprising a pair of openwork ‘bow-tie’ quillons, shield-shaped langets, the outer set with the engraved Spanish Royal Arms, plumed helmet pommel, and faceted silver grip engraved with conventional foliage, in its gilt-brass scabbard with three rings for suspension, the outer surface engraved with foliage, lightning bolts, and the Spanish Royal arms above a pair of crossed cannon
