Like many contemporary services, the pattern used on the present part service is inspired by Sèvres porcelain. The use of a green ground reserved with dotted circles is asscoiated with a service known as the Duke of Gloucester or Duke of Cambridge service although, in the case of this service, the green is brighter, the oeil-de-perdrix pattern less crowded and there is a variation to the gilded cartouches and C-scroll borders. The attribution derives from a service illustrated by E. Morton Nance, The Pottery and Porcelain of Swansea and Nantgarw, London, 1942, plate CLXI, p.370 where the author suggests the service was reputedly ordered for the Duke of Gloucester in celebration of his marriage.
