Description
Property from the Berkeley Collection at Spetchley Park
A George IV mahogany library table, circa 1825, attributed to Gillows
the tooled leather-lined top above two drawers to each side, on reeded turned tapering legs with brass caps and castors
77cm. high, 137cm. wide, 85cm. deep; 2ft. 6½in., 4ft. 6in., 2ft. 9 ½ in.
Photographed in the Staircase Hall at Spetchley Park at the end of the 19th century (see black and white photo in image carousel).
This table might well have been supplied alongside other high-quality pieces by Gillows to Robert Berkeley (1764-1845) for Spetchley Park, shortly after the house was completed in 1821. The Gillows commission was extensive and included a long run of Grecian inspired dining chairs for the Dining Room (see Spetchley, Sotheby's London, 11 December 2019, lot 55. The commission may well have included the extraordinary pair of carved giltwood curtain poles also in this sale (lot 183).
