From the Duques de Tamames Collection

A French hunting sword of exhibition quality, circa 1860-80


with broad straight blade formed with a pair of full length fullers, silver hilt cast and chased in relief, comprising guard formed of a pair of vertically recurved scrolling quillons joined to the shell-guard, all decorated with elaborate scrolls and foliage, the grip formed as a standing hunter in traditional dress, his right hand clasping a club and his foot upon a snarling fox, in its leather scabbard with engraved locket decorated with scrolls ad foliage and with a button for suspension

Duques de Tamames, Madrid.

A sword of related type was presented by Napoleon III to the Marquis of Hertford and is now preserved in the Wallace Collection, London (inv. no. A707). Another example, of the same form as the present sword, signed Janisset, Paris, was sold Sotheby’s 24th July 1995, lot 328.
