A fine silk and metal-thread embroidered ivory satin chalice veil, Italian, first half 17th century


worked in polychrome silks and metal-threads on an ivory coloured satin ground, centred with a cross applied with an oval portrait of the Madonna, surrounded by large inward facing flowers, including tulips, lilies and carnations, the outer four-sided border worked with satin stitch fruits and blossoms, with raised silver-thread detailing, the four edges applied with silver bobbin lace

A chalice veil is a piece of square material, usually about 60cm square, used to cover the chalice, which is a cup which contains the wine used for Holy Communion. They were often elaborately and finely embroidered as this one is.
