Completed in 1985, Warhol’s screenprinted depiction of Queen Beatrix reflects his deep fascination with influential figures and the intersection of power and celebrity. Queen Beatrix, born on January 31, 1938, in Soestdijk Palace, the Netherlands, ascended to the throne on April 30, 1980, just five years before this portrait was published, following the abdication of her mother, Queen Juliana. She belongs to the House of Orange-Nassau, a dynasty deeply rooted in Dutch history. Renowned for her dignified and devoted service to her country during her tenure as monarch, she remains beloved worldwide. Popular and powerful as the leader of a nation known for its rich cultural heritage and global reach, Queen Beatrix was the ideal subject for Warhol. Printed in a unique combination of colours, this rare trial proof aside from the standard edition is rendered in bright orange, perhaps to pay homage to the House of Orange.
