This poem was penned by Emperor Qianlong in the 49th year of his reign (1784), titled "Bestowed upon the Governor-General of Liangjiang (Nanjing area), Sazai", which may be translated as:

For many years you've ruled the South with measured pace,

Skilled in governance, you've mended rivers with grace.

Yet, in all tasks, be ever vigilant and wise,

Do not slacken your own efforts, for complacency belies.

Fear not that scholars or warriors might their duties shirk,

Seek instead frugality among the people, as virtue's work.

Those who respect time, like Yan Pingzhong, earn their mark,

By rectitude and measure, as their guide—now, let us embark.
