Judith Joy Ross, a native of Eastern Pennsylvania, spent most of her 40-year career photographing individuals in that region, including Hazelton, a working-class town located at the foothills of the Pocono mountains.  Her portraits of students at Hazelton High School captures the unease, awkwardness, energy, and innocence of the teenage experience.  Using an 8-by-10 inch camera, Ross create images with tremendous detail, while gold toning gives each print a lush, almost dreamlike quality.  A retrospective of Ross's work traveled internationally, beginning at Fundación MAPFRE in 2022 and ending at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2023.
