Susan Sontag, a literary celebrity of academic and critical writing, agreed to pen the foreword for Peter Hujar’s Portraits in Life and Death. Writing about his larger work, Sontag expressed her belief that Hujar "knows that portraits in life are always, also, portraits in death … I am moved by the purity and delicacy of his intentions." Portraits in Life and Death was the photographer's only book published in his lifetime.
