With Owen Edgar Gallery, London;
From whom acquired by the present owner in March 1988 for £6,500.
As well as providing a historic view of St Paul's Cathedral as it appeared in the late eighteenth century, the most prominent feature of this painting is the inclusion of the lead Shot Tower on the right, established by Watts, George & Co. in 1788. Measuring 140 feet high, this tower was designed to produce symmetrical shot (lead bullets) used by the British army for muskets. The original tower seen here was destroyed by fire on 5 January 1826.
Another version of this composition is in the Guildhall Art Gallery, London.1
