George Fennel Robson was born in Durham. His father was a wine merchant who encouraged him to pursue a career as an artist. In 1806 he moved to London with ’5l. in his pocket’. He met with almost immediate success, so much so, that he was able to repay his father within the year.
In 1807 he made his debut at the Royal Academy’s annual exhibition, while in 1813 he began to exhibit at the Society of Painters in Oil and Watercolour, later known as Royal Watercolour Society. He was devoted to the Society and in 1819 he was elected its President.
