where acquired by the parents of the current owners
This large-scale watercolour may date to circa 1849, shortly after Nicholl returned from Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka), where he had held the post of 'drawings master' at the Colombo Academy since 1846.
This composition was repeated, with differences, on a number of occasions by the artist. See, for example: sale, London, Christie's, 9 November 2000, lot 450.
