In the 1813 Royal Academy exhibition John Martin exhibited an oil painting entitled Adam’s first sight of Eve (now in the Glasgow Museums). The present watercolour is related to this important early work, which was displayed together with the following text from Milton: 'Nature herself, though pure of sinful thought, wrought on her so, that seeing me, she turn'd.’
