This work is typical of Calvert's late 'pagan' period when, after a tour of Greece in 1844, he associated the geographical Arcadia in the Peloponnese with the Arcadia of classical literature and art.

Along with Samuel Palmer, Calvert was part of the 'Ancients', a group of young artists who - in the 1820s and 1830s - were particularly inspired by William Blake.
