Copley Fielding was among the leading painters of his day. He became a member of the Old Water-colour Society (later the Royal Society of Watercolours) in 1813 and was appointed President in 1831, a position he held until his death in 1855. He achieved international recognition in 1824 when he won a gold medal at the Paris Salon. Other prize winners that year were Richard Parkes Bonington and John Constable.

This present watercolour is dated 1809 and is a significant early work.
