John White Abbot was born in Devon and he worked as a surgeon in Exeter. He was also a very talented amateur artist who took lessons from, and was heavily inspired by, Francis Towne (1739/40-1816). He never travelled abroad and his knowledge of old master paintings was derived from prints and engravings. There is another group of drawings after the old masters by Abbott in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.1
