Gerrit Lamberts was one of the most talented and original Dutch draughtsmen of the early years of the 19th century, often, as here, approaching his topographical subjects in unexpected ways. Here we see the view out through the gateway of the historic castle at Heemstede, by Haarlem; the fact that some two thirds of the surface of the drawing is devoted to the largely blank castle wall only serves to focus attention even more effectively on the distant outside view. Originally built in 1280, the castle was adapted burned and rebuilt at various intervals. It was finally destroyed in 1810, and today only its gatehouse survives.
