Paulus van Liender
Utrecht 1731 - 1797 Haarlem
The Belvedère on the dune at the Meerenberg estate
Pen and dark brown ink and wash over black chalk, within brown ink framing lines;
signed and dated verso: Paul van Liender fec / 1788 and bears inscription on old backing sheet: Paul van Liender fec:t 1788
352 by 467 mm; 13⅞ by 18⅜ in.
This and lot 326 are particularly fine, large examples of Van Liender's later landscapes, in which a proto-romantic approach to the wooded views he depicted is blended with the more precise topographical imagery of the artist's earlier works, creating superbly atmospheric results, especially when the drawings are as outstandingly well preserved as the present pair.
The view in this drawing shows the edge of the dunes (their height perhaps slightly embellished) at the Meerenberg estate to the west of Haarlem, with the 'Belvedère' that had recently been built there when Van Liender made his drawing, as part of an English-style landscaping exercise. Though the building is long gone, there have been schemes in recent years to rebuild it.
