Study of the Medici Thusnelda

Red chalk

496 by 197 mm; 19½ by 7¾ in.

The present work is a fine and beautifully preserved example of Pajou's highly finished drawings in red chalk.

The artist approached the subject of the Medici Thusnelda on at least one other occasion, in a drawing executed in pen and brown ink and brown and gray wash previously in the Horvitz collection, prior to being gifted to the Harvard Art Museums in 1999.1
