Casper Netscher made drawings both in preparation for his paintings and as ricordi of commissions, and his family members and other pupils and assistants did the same, leading, as Betsy Wieseman has observed, to a certain lack of clarity regarding attributions.1 Although no painting by Netscher with this composition is known, he did occasionally make elaborate group portraits in outdoor settings like this, for example the 1667 Portrait of a Magistrate and his Family, in Rotterdam2, and the quality and handling of the drawing certainly do not exclude an attribution to Netscher himself.
