Laroon was the son and grandson of painters and as a professional painter himself he became a member of London's Academy of Painting in 1712. Away from the art world - he also sung on the London stage - he served, eventually as a Captain, in the British army during the War of the Spanish Succession. He was much travelled, visiting Venice, Spain and the low countries.
According to the inscription, the present drawing was made in 1762, a period when Laroon was living in Oxford.
