Sketch for a portrait of Richard Robinson (1709–1794), Baron Rokeby
oil on board
unframed: 16.4 x 11.7 cm.; 6½ x 4⅝ in.
framed: 21.4 x 17 cm.; 8⅜ x 6¾ in.
This fluid and quickly executed sketch relates to Reynolds' 1763 portrait of Richard Robinson, Baron Rokeby (1709–1794) in the collections of Christchurch College, Oxford.1 Although works in this format are rare, the quality of this sketch can be compared to the artist's sketch in grisaille of the Duchess of Buccleuch and her daughter preserved at Bowhill.2
