Charlotte Louisa Adela Evelina Rothschild (1873–1947), Swinton Grange, North Yorkshire;
By descent in the family;
By whom sold ('Property from the collection of The Hon. Evelina Rothschild and the Behrens Family'), London, Christie's, 7 July 2017, lot 41.
Paritsan (b. 1811) was a bay calf bred by the Duke of Grafton and established a relatively successful and lost-lasting sire line in England and Europe. He won three 200 guineas races at Newmarket during his opening two years, although became known for his delicate physical condition. Partisan continued to produce four classic winners who all raced longer and harder than their sire.
This beautifully preserved painting was formerly in the collection of Charlotte Louisa Adela Evelina Rothschild (1873–1947), the only daughter of Nathan Mayer de Rothschild, 1st Baron Rothschild (1840–1911) and his wife Emma Rothschild (1844–1935) .
