Description
The Property of a Gentleman
Paul Bril
Antwerp circa 1554–1626 Rome
An extensive mountainous landscape with shepherds, animals and a castle beyond
oil on copper, laid onto panel
unframed: 22 x 29.6 cm.; 8⅝ x 11⅝ in.
framed: 38.4 x 46 cm.; 15⅛ x 18⅛ in.
With Richard Green, London;
From whom acquired by the present owner, for £2,900, in 1972.
This minutely observed landscape painted on copper relates to a signed drawing by Paul Bril in the Courtauld Gallery, London.1 Dated 1607 and inscribed Roma, the drawing was probably used by the artist at a later date as an aide mémoire for this painting. The inclusion of animals and figures, details of which are absent in the work on paper, suggests the painting was made slightly later.
1 Pen and brown ink, black chalk and graphite on paper, 20.1 x 27.2 cm.; http://www.artandarchitecture.org.uk/images/gallery/30a1c4da.html
