This work is a study for the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on 17 December 1938. Affixed to the backing board is an original correspondence between Norman Rockwell and the first owner of the work. It reads: "Dear Miss Hieronymus / I never send sketches / but your letter was so / nice I am sending along / this rough little sketch. / It was the sketch for the 1938 X'mas number. / Sincerely / Norman / Rockwell."
