Thence by descent

Ronald Barnett met Mohan Samant in Washington Square Park in the early 1960s, while Samant was in New York on a Rockefeller Fellowship. They connected over a love of art and culture and Samant introduced Barnett to the community of Indian artists living and working in New York at the time. The current lot was gifted to Barnett in 1963 before his brief return to India. Samant permanently settled in New York from 1968, and he remained friends with Barnett until his death in 2004. This painting is a testament to their enduring friendship.
