Dylan Lewis is a South African born figurative artist who is widely recognised as one of the world’s foremost sculptors of the animal form. The present lot, Running Cheetah Pair II, exemplifies the large-scale feline sculptures which have distinguished Lewis’s practice. These dynamic figures form a powerful modern commentary on the sub-Saharan African cat and the environment these creatures live and thrive in. Having spent a large amount of his life immersing himself in wild cat’s natural environment, Lewis has interacted with and studied these creatures’ intricate and previously unchartered ways of life, individualizing each creature and documenting their unique personalities, habits, and group dynamics, a venture previously unexplored in the fine art realm.
