Revealing his master draftsmanship in just a few lines, Hockney here depicts his friend Ole lying down on the bed on his stomach and his head propped up by his hands, as the Artist observes him transfixed by a small television that sits on a shelf at the end of the bed. This work was depicted in 1968 at Hockney's iconic flat at 17 Powis Terrace, Notting Hill. Designed by the architect and the Artist's friend Tchaik Chassay, Hockney stayed living in this flat, which had only had a small studio upstairs, until very recently in 2019.
There are a few drawings that Hockney made similarly of friends relaxing and spending time with him at Powis Terrace, including Mo in Powis Terrace from the same year, sold in these rooms in 2022 (https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2022/made-in-britain/mo-in-powis-terrace).
