Sale, Utrecht, J.L. Beyers, 28 March 1983, lot 1692,
where purchased by A.M. ('Ton') van den Broek (1932-1995), Haarlem (bears his mark, verso, not in Lugt)
Of the many highly skilled natural history artists working in late 17th-century Holland, Rochus van Veen was one of the more individual in his approach to his subject, often annotating his works with revealing comments and observations.  Here, we read the precise circumstances under which the bird depicted met its end: it was shot by the inn keeper Claes Gerritsz Duynmeyer of the well-known inn ‘Out Roomen’ outside Beverwijk, near Haarlem.
