This assured and confident portrait of a young man, hand resting on hip and turned towards the viewer, is executed in a combination of chalks, the choice of medium being a specialty of the artist, who was referred to in his time as the best artist in crayons in Europe.
Daniel Dumonstier was a member of an extended family of artists, painters, draughtsman, goldsmiths and sculptors. Daniel, alongside his cousin, Pierre Dumonstier (c.1585 - 1656), were best known as portraitists working for the French Court. In 1601, Daniel Dumonstier was appointed painter to the Dauphin (later Louis XIII) and in 1603 became Peintre et Valet de Chambre to Henry IV.
He had a renowned collection of natural history curiosities, medals, objets d'art, books and manuscripts.
