Lady with a mirror

Tergis collection, New York;

Thereafter acquired by the present owner.

This grand composition is likely a nineteenth-century copy of Titian's ever-popular Woman with a mirror (Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. no. 755). The original, executed circa 1515, passed through numerous illustrious collections, including those belonging to the Gonzaga family in Mantua, Charles I, King of England, and Louis XIV, King of France. The proliferation of versions (today in museums in Barcelona, Prague, and Washington, D.C., among other repositories), underscores the enduring popularity of the sensual image.
