This monumental kitchen scene, a genre in which Floris van Schooten excelled, features a well-dressed woman and her son beside a large wooden table laden with assorted foodstuffs and utensils. In addition to fish and game, the vittles include a flowering cabbage, an artichoke head, and several carrots, as well as a tub of apples. Brass and pewter cooking implements and vessels also fill the space and add surface luster to the composition. Offering a view of an additional kitchen space beyond, an aperture reveals a background where a domestic servant tends to household chores.
