Italian, dated 1571

The Entombment

inscribed GIO GIA and dated 1571

gilt-bronze

7 ½ by 4 ⅞ in.; 19 by 12.4cm.

The present work, depicting the Entombement, is believed to be from the workshop of Galeazzo Mondella, called ‘Moderno,’ as its composition is nearly identical to known works by him. A bronze plaque of the same subject and composition, with Christ in the middle flanked by the Virgin wearing a wimple on the left and Saint John on the right, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and is also attributed to Moderno (accession number 31.33.8). An additional example of this cast, which varies slightly due to the presence of a putto, is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and is stamped with a M, for Moderno's workshop (accession number 1996.41.1).
