This imaginary interior by Bartholomeus van Bassen depicts an expansive view of the central nave at the trancept of a magnificent Gothic church. Notable for its architectural details, the centrally-aligned composition features a soaring vault supported by Corinthian piers, a complex orchestration of side chapels and niches, and ornamental stonework embellishments. Here, his natural play of light and strict adherence to accurate linear perspective shows his influence from the Dutch, particularly Delft painting tradition. The spacious interior is enlivened by elegantly attired churchgoing figures, possibly the contributions of Esaias Van de Velde who often provided the staffage for Van Bassen’s interiors.
