Signed and dated 1785, this tranquil harbor landscape by Jean-Baptiste Pillement was painted during the artist’s penultimate year in Portugal. During his time on the Iberian Peninsula from 1780 to 1786, Pillement produced a number of seascapes, coastal scenes, and views of the Tagus river basin including the present picture. Rendered with the luminous palette and lighthearted sensibility typical of the Rococo, this idyllic scene depicts a Mediterranean harbor at dawn, conveyed by the pinkish hue of crepuscular light.
