Description

Property from a Private Collection, Sold Without Reserve

Carlo Cherubini

Italian 1897-1978

Woman with a Lace Veil

signed and dated upper left: Car. Cherubini/ Paris 1930

oil on canvas

canvas: 21 ¾ by 15 in., 55 by 38 cm

framed: 24 ¾ by 18 ¼ in., 63 by 46.5 cm

This portrait study seems to relate to other flamenco scenes Cherubini painted in the 1930s in Paris, notably Flamengo, for which he received honorable mention at the 1930 Salon des Artistes Français (sold at Sotheby's, New York, June 2023).

Born in Venice, Cherubini moved to Paris in the 1920s and achieved international notoriety for a series of lavish multi-figural art deco murals for Le Lido des Champs-Elysées, a private club in Paris at 78 Avenue des Champs-Élysées which opened in Paris 1928 and still exists today (though the interior has since been renovated and the paintings disassembled).
