Rebecca at the Well
signed GUGLIELMI on the base
marble
height overall: 59 ¼ in.; 150.5 cm.
The present marble is a model not previously seen in Luigi Guglielmi's oeuvre. The work depicts the biblical story of Rebecca fetching water for Isaac from a well. Rebecca is portrayed here according to 19th century taste, with a demure expression and almost overt femininity.
Guglielmi trained at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome under Filippo Gnaccarini. His works initially focused on neoclassical subjects, but as he matured, his style became more romantic and realist, as demonstrated in the above work. Throughout his career, he exhibited in London, Paris and Munich.
