Sogliani's depiction of the young Saint John the Baptist originally formed part of a larger composition that included a Madonna and Child.1 Such works enjoyed widespread popularity in sixteenth-century Florence and Sogliani produced many paintings that are variations on this theme. Examples include a painting in the Museo della Misericordia, Florence and another sold Sotheby's, London, 5 July 2018, lot 111.

1 Perhaps the Madonna and Child sold at San Marco Casa d'Aste, Venice, 2 November 2005, lot 95.
