Teniers probably executed this signed work in the early 1640s, when he began to turn his attention away from scenes of peasant life and toward tranquil views of castles and grand country manors. The turreted castle in the present painting was likely a structure conjured in the artist's imagination, but on occasion Teniers did depict specific structures, his own chateau, Drij Toren, among them.

This work is accompanied by a written certificate by Dr, Margaret Klinge endorsing the attribution to David Teniers the Younger.
